THE ELEMENTAL COMPASS
As vastly diverse as the world is, all things are united by one underlying cosmological framework: the Elemental Compass. It encompasses all the wildly differing magics, monsters, and ways of being. There are four cardinal points on the compass, forming two axes. Along one axis lies the eternal struggle between Order and Chaos. Perpendicular to this axis is the unending battle between Harmony and Discipline. To be on the center of the compass is to be Neutral.
Order seeks to unify the world under rule of law, religion, and conformity. The priests of order call down holy magic to heal the righteous and smite those it sees as evil. Order paladins are gifted wondrous might for their virtuous deeds. Demons and other hellspawn seek the same goals, but under a much more sinister hegemony.
Chaos wants to free the world, encouraging anarchy, free thought, and uniqueness. Warlocks have no compunction about cavorting with dark magics to hex and hurt their enemies. Rogues fight with tactics some would call “dirty” striking from the shadows. The undead have broken free from the shackles of life and death, sowing dreadful discord wherever they shamble.
Harmony follows the natural flow of the world, pursuing balance, peace, and understanding. The magic of nature itself empowers druids to protect and spread their domains. Realizing their role in the circle of life, rangers are skilled hunters. Fearsome predators roam dungeon and wilds alike, stalking prey with cunning and power.
Discipline’s goals are to master themselves and the world around them, using willpower, conquest, and training. Wizards study long years to manipulate the strange sciences of arcane magic. Warriors hone their bodies and minds into intimidating powerhouses of martial might. Orckin hordes ravage the countryside, pillaging and destroying in a great wave of bloodlust.
